Bombshelter and a demolished building. Add one model.

Did a shoot in a run-down bombshelter and in the remains of a nearly-demolished building last saturday, and it was a good fun time. Here's some of the pics.

Mostly used two 550EX flashes, one thru a homemade beauty dish as key and the other one thru a medium sized softbox as fill.

Shot some promo stuff for a fashionista-fashionpolice kinda person this sunday. 5-6 hours, mostly outside in -10 or so celcius. A bit nippy.

This was the first time that I got to work with my stylist, Akira Ahola. Judging by this single assignment, we work well together. Even though the conditions were a bit harsh, the pics came out nice, I will probably post them later.

DIY striplights

DIY striplights in the making. 100cm long and 10cm wide, with an added sheet of clear plastic to help with the even distribution of light. I still haven't decided on the front diffusion material, and I have to come up with a nice and clean way to make a housing for the flash.

Can't wait to use these puppies.

Thinking of doing a 1930's mafia series

So lately I've been getting into doing vintage pics – finger wave hair, hard directional light, cigarettes, you know the drill.

So my newest project is one of almost epic proportions: I'm attempting to get together three guys that look like mobsters, a 1930's A-type Ford, a Thompson 1928 machine gun aka. tommygun and clothes to match.

Today, I phoned a man who has run a vintage car association for a while now, but since retired. He was a really pleasant man called Risto Sihvola, who owns several old Ford automobiles. He happens to have a 1928 A-type, and a 1931 A-type. One of those would be perfect for my goal.

I was originally going to borrow an airsoft-version of the Thompson, but Sihvola also happens to have a a genuine tommygun amongst his possessions – deactivated of course. And get this: he has a plethora of clothes and accessories to go with the look. Damn.

I'm definitely moving ahead with the planning and preparation, and I'll post something here if things move in the right direction.

DIY-tiltshift lens

A series of photos illustrating the making of a DIY tilt-shift lens.

1. Acquire a cheap medium format lens. The mount of the lens doesn't matter. I used a Vega 90mm 2.8, which had non-functioning aperture blades

2. Strip the lens to it's smallest.

3. Drill the body cover to a ring.

4. What you need is a flexible rubber housing for the lens. I got mine from Biltema, it's officially a protective rubber thingy for some steering part in cars.

5. Cut the rubber housing so that the lens is roughly in focus.

6. Attach the lens to the housing. Means for this are many.

7. Hot glue the hollowed-out body cover to the rubber housing.

8. Done. Go shoot.

Sini and the showercurtain

Last tuesday we we're at Kaisaniemi parking lot shooting Sini, and trying out some new tricks. We duct taped a blank white shower curtain to the ceiling and attached a flash stand to the bottom, so that the curtain acted as a diffuser for the sunlight – and it worked wonders. With the added 550EX from the right hand side, we got some sweet high-key shots.
